I have always loved the Autumn. As one of my favourite seasons of the year, I have never felt like Alberta has had much to offer in the range of colours and smells and the general FEEL of my childhood falls. This year has been a little bit different. Since I’ve lived here, we’ve never had a warmer fall season, nor such a range in colours!

Pete and I have certainly been taking advantage of this weather and this season.

We have been dedicated to making some very “Fall” recipes, including Baked Potato, Bacon, and Cheese soup AND Butternut Squash soup. The next soup on my list? French Onion!

We’ve been making and enjoying delicious Pumpkin Chai Tea from David’s Tea while reading. I am currently reading (and almost finished) the first book of the Game of Thrones series, A Song of Ice and Fire. The series is very political-intrigue fantasy told, chapter to chapter, from different characters’ points of view. It is EXCELLENT so far.

We have enjoyed quite a few walks, and plan on more than a few more, as we begin October and hope the weather stays in its current state.

Some of our other plans for this fall season include more of what we’ve already been doing, but especially some more Fall-esque recipies, getting together with friends and family, planning for our upcoming Halloween party, carving pumpkins over Skype with our best friends (Lee and Jenn), a last Farmer’s Market trip, a trip to Fort Edmonton Park, and, of course, my regular activities (Yoga, Running, Reading) I’m excited for all that this so-far lovely month might offer us!

What are YOUR plans for this Fall season?

As the mass of snow that we had piled up is finally melting, I find myself thinking and dreaming more and more of warm weather and the joys that come with it.

Oh Cruel Winter… Sigh…

I hate being cold. It’s not that I hate the winter – I love how pretty snow and frost looks, and I love Christmas. What I detest is always feeling like I’m not quite warm enough. Alright, I also loathe the short days that winters give us. There are no winter smells because your nose is so stuffed up from getting a cold or the flu. The streets are silent but for the scraping of shovels and graders against sidewalks and roads – not the most desirable sound. The cold whip of the wind against you, chilling you to the bone, as you hurry from car or bus to the closest shelter is a constant reminder as to how desolate the winter can be. Le sigh.

Sunny and Sprinkling Spring…

How can you hate warmth, the feel of cool rain on your cheeks and hair, and the light scent of dewdrops on grass after a spring rainfall? I dislike how muddy the beginning of spring is, but I don’t hate it. I enjoy stomping on the last pieces of ice grasping for life on the edges of melting sidewalks, even if it means you get splashed by the occasional puddle. I love the sweet flowery aroma of blooming buds and the harmonic notes that the rain plays against the windows. I crave the thunderstorm musicals as they trumpet across the sky, inviting me to experience every BOOM and CRACK that they offer. And, as the birds make their way back from their long journey, you can hear the songs they sing both of joy and of seduction for each other.

The Spicy Scorching Summer…

Heat! Heat! Heat! Hot sunshine that bathes you until your skin browns and your hair glows! The only thing I dislike is sunburns, but they always fade into nice tans and after a short time stop stinging – so no harm done. I love the feeling of being so hot that you’re dripping in sweat that you stand in front of a fan and have the cool breezes wash over your skin. I take pleasure in stepping in a shower to wash off the sweat and opening a cold beer – because only that can cool you down properly. And the odd day in a heat wave where a cool breeze passes lazily through the air you feel as though mother earth herself is cooling her sweltering body. The smells of summer are not as sweet as the smells of spring, but you get the sharp breath of freshly cut grass every few days, the repugnant stink of hot tar from road-workers, the force of the forest scents you inhale as you take a walk through the paths, the cool smell of rich pipe tobacco, and the There seems to be a constant stream of oratory gab – children laughing and shouting, outdoor workers calling orders to each other, friends chatting, running shoes steadily thumping against the paths and sidewalks, bicycle bells ringing in alert, and parents calling their kids in for meals or snacks. You can hear sprinklers begging the grass to grow greener, the crack of a beer or a pop opening to quench a dry tongue, and the constant chattering of wild animals. The summer is ALIVE.

But alas – a few more cool days await us as winter comes to an end. I shall patiently wait them out and dream of warmer weather.

Cheers,

Tess

It’s been a very long, sometimes awesome, sometimes stressful, and sometimes normal two years. Although I will be incredibly sad to leave my job (in exactly ten weeks and two days), there are a few things that I have really missed.

They are:

NUMBER ONE:
scrubs

The feeling of getting up ten minutes before needing to go to work and only having to choose between colours is one of my favorite feelings. You climb out of bed, out of pyjamas, and back into pyjamas. Comfy, and easy to pick out. Should I wear purple, green, red, blue, or black today? It’s simplicity at its finest.

NUMBER TWO:
walk

Walking at work.

Far too much of the past two years my job has involved too much sitting and not enough walking and standing. That’s what I love about working in the hospital – even working at the front desk in DI, I still am constantly getting up and walking around and standing.

NUMBER THREE:
phone

Not having a need to check my email constantly throughout the day.

NUMBER FOUR:

papers

Never bringing work home. If you aren’t done your work at the hospital, because it got too busy, it’s okay. Because the next shift will take care of it, and if they don’t get it done, that’s okay too, because then when you’re on shift again you’ll get it done. You never have to worry about bringing work home.

Those are just some of the things I’ve missed.

I know I will also miss things about being an executive, but for now I’m in the stage where I’m really excited to end the year strong and go back to enjoying those little things I’ve been missing.

Cheers!
